Business Studies

Head of Department: Mrs L Leadbetter

In the business department we want to provide students with a caring, inclusive environment which enables us to give them the knowledge, understanding and skills to progress onto the next stage of their education, irrespective of their prior attainment. We want to cultivate a deeper understanding of the businesses that students will work for or run, in the hope of inspiring the next generation of entrepreneurs.

All learners who study Business at the school will cover all areas within the DfE subject content for both GCSE and A level business by having the opportunity to develop their understanding of business concepts and terminology, draw on evidence and make informed business decisions through analysis and evaluation. In addition, learners will develop and apply quantitative skills relevant to business.

The Business Department aims to:

  • Provide an ambitious curriculum which develops enterprising minds
  • Provide engaging lessons that evoke curiosity and provide the depth and breadth of knowledge required
  • Provide extra-curricula opportunities to enhance students’ cultural capital
  • Provide a caring and inclusive environment for all learners to progress in

We believe that our carefully planned, broad and balanced curriculum not only provides learners with coverage of all the DfE subject content for Business, but is also organised logically, taking learners on the journey of starting a business, to growing a successful business. In addition, our curriculum will help shape students, instil confidence and inspire them to enter into the world of business. We want them to develop as independent students, and as critical and reflective thinkers with enquiring minds.

Our curriculum is implemented by ensuring that:

  • Learners are exposed to contemporary business contexts through practical and engaging case studies in the classroom. We also use real and relevant business examples to engage our students.
  • The expertise of teachers within the department provides opportunity for students to gain a secure knowledge of business concepts and create enjoyable experiences from which students can learn
  • Teachers plan learning which allows learners to recall knowledge in order to embed learning into long term memory

Cultural Capital

The implementation of the business curriculum includes opportunities for learners to become involved in a range of enrichment opportunities which contributes towards nurturing happiness, a love of the subject, and consequently academic success.

School trips to long standing businesses/organisations such as Jaguar Land Rover, Alton Towers, Chester Zoo bring learning to life in real-world environments.

We also arrange local entrepreneurs to come in and speak to our students to give them an understanding of the attributes required to be a successful businessperson. In addition, we have arranged workshops from HMRC to not only inform students for business purpose, but also to equip them with the life-skills that they require. Students have also attended workshops run by The Insurance Institute of Liverpool, enabling them to take part in activities as well as learning about the different routes that can be taken into the insurance industry.

Throughout the course students are exposed to the ethical dilemmas and responsibilities that face modern businesses, as well as being encouraged to keep up to date with current business news.

Our subject curriculum has enabled our learners to:

  • achieve qualifications in GCSE Business and ‘A’ level Business
  • enter further and higher education at Liverpool John Moores University to study Business Management, Sports Business, Business and marketing, Quantity Surveying and Accountancy and finance. In addition, many students have moved on to Business Administration Apprenticeships.
  • Since last Ofsted in 2016 we have experienced some of our best results

In 2017 the Business department achieved 70.8% A*-C grades. This was 7.6% above the national average of 63.2%.

A level88 % pass rate and 63% A – C grade and 88% A-E.
