Art is a popular subject which allows the pupils to be creative through use of 2d and 3d outcomes. Pupils benefit from first hand study, exciting projects which form building blocks and skills in KS3 to pupils becoming independent, confident learners at KS4.Pupils have the use of well-equipped art rooms, access to ICT and photography which promotes cross curricular links.
As part of enrichment, pupils will be expected to attend twilight sessions and complete work at home in order to complete tasks.
Students who are passionate about Art and are successful in gaining a grade 5/6 in Art at GCSE and grade 4 in English can take advanced studies at our 6th form to study Art which can then lead to further education or employment in the following sectors – Advertising, Architecture, Art and antiques, Crafts, Design, Designer fashion, Film and video, Interactive leisure software, Music, The Performing arts, Publishing, Software and computer services, Television and radio.
We introduce our pupils to the foundations for success at GCSE both in terms of practical and analytical skills. We begin the year with a base line assessment followed by a six week block of key skills including, focusing on first hand observation, tones and shading, the colour wheel. Projects include ‘Alice in Wonderland’ and ‘Portraiture, with focus on many different artist techniques including; pattern application, collage, mono printing, water colour painting, resist techniques and ceramics. Alongside the practical work we introduce pupils to the good practises of reflection and presentation. Using basic annotation pupils will be able to record, reflect and review the skills they have learnt, and will begin to appreciate the importance of effective presentation.
We aim continue to teach and develop practical and analytical skills that are the foundations for success at GCSE. The year begins with a base line assessment which aims to highlight progression and to ensure that pupils understand their levels of assessment.
Pupils will the focus on culture and microscopic worlds that will form a body of work including individual and group pieces, learning to collaborate with others to fulfil the brief. They will also produce a well-informed personal piece based on artists that they have chosen to research, respond to feedback and continue to annotate constructively.
Is the transition year towards GCSE and the course provides pupils the opportunity to produce work based on chosen themes of work that can be individually tailored to ensure students have every opportunity to show pride and resilience throughout the year.
Colour, pattern and observation which allows pupils to develop a range of different sized outcomes using 2D and 3D materials, including photo shop, ceramics ,textiles alongside painting and drawing, printing .developing sketchbook ideas and annotation. Pupils receive individual feedback and stretch and challenge activities in order to reach their targets and focus on individually chosen artists that influence their work.
Students choose their own personal projects and develop their creativity further. They will have first-hand study trips and we exhibit their work regularly showing pride in their work. There are opportunities for group work and pupils regularly critique each other work showing kindness and an enjoyment of their achievements. They also get to undertake a mock GCSE exam preparing themselves for year 11. In year 11 pupils will complete their portfolio which represents (60%) of their assessment the remaining (40%) is completed in an exam. The exam preparation starts in January, students choose a theme and develop this both practically and analytically ready for their exam. The final examination piece is a 10 hour drawing or painting incorporating all of their ideas.
